Some more research

Here are the strange results after some more research:
1) When you create a document, it gets added to the other replica (as it should)
2) When you change the document, it gets deleted from the other replica (actually 1 document less in the database)
3) When you change the document again, nothing happens to the other replica, but when you replicate manually, it gets added again to the other replica
